Starbucks and school canteen among 10 premises ordered to shut over food safety fears

Pubs, hotel restaurants and country clubs have been served closure orders.

A BRANCH OF Starbucks in Waterford was one of 10 food businesses hit with closure orders by the food safety watchdog this month.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said this afternoon that the franchise on Great George’s Street in the city is subject to a closure order.

A catering company supplying food to Castlerea Community School in Roscommon was also ordered to close until they resolve outstanding safety issues.

There were 10 closure orders in total in the latest food safety sweep.

Other businesses ordered to close include:

  • Ruby King Restaurant, West Business Park, Roscommon
  • Akanchawa’s Honey Pot, Mountjoy Square, Dublin
  • Fernhill Golf & Country Club, Carrigaline, Cork
  • Hannons Oakwood Hotel, Roscommon
  • Get Fresh Catering, Castlerea Community School, Roscommon
  • Hairy Ned’s Pub and Shop, Cavan

A full list of restaurants issued closure orders can be found here.

Dr Pamela Byrne, chief executive of the FSAI emphasised the serious nature of a food business being served an enforcement order.

She said:

Enforcement orders and, most especially, closure orders and prohibition orders are never served for minor food safety breaches.

“They are served on food businesses only when a serious risk to consumer health has been identified or where there are a number of ongoing breaches of food legislation and that largely tends to relate to a grave hygiene or operational issue.

“There can be no excuse for putting consumers’ health at risk through negligent practices.

“Food businesses have a legal onus to make sure that the food they sell or serve is safe to eat.”
